Sacajawea, a seventeen year old Shoshoni Indian girl, was an illiterate slave that could speak five languages. Her knowledge of the people and the lands of the North Western United States gave her the ability to lead the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806) across more than 2,000 miles of uncharted wilderness without the loss of one life. Her undying courage, cheerful spirit, and willingness to serve the men she led, when coupled with her practical knowledge made her an invaluable part of President Thomas Jefferson’s quest for knowledge. | ||
